In June 2024, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) announced that SINOVAC is to invest $100 million in the development of cell therapy, vaccine production, and monoclonal antibodies in Brazil. This was shared at a meeting with the Vice President of the Republic and Minister of Development, Industry, and Commerica Geraldo Alckmin in Beijing. The companies also announced their intention to “cooperate in the research and development of vaccines to tackle health crises.

Furthering the relationship

SINOVAC states that its COVID-19 vaccines were the “first to enter the Brazilian market during the pandemic”. At the time, 110 million doses of Coronavac were administered in Brazil.  Alckmin recognised this partnership, stating “I took Coronvavac”.

“Science helps the world and we have to advance even further, we have to work together, and so I welcome Sinovac’s willingness to invest in Brazil.”

SINOVAC is to invest $100 million from 2024, which will contribute to cell therapy and localised production of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. It is engaged in “intensive discussions” with potential partners.

The two organisations also announced their intention to cooperate in vaccine research and development to “jointly strengthen their roles as the official representatives” of Brazil and China in the BRICS vaccine R&D centre. The centre, established in 2022, seeks to enhance the production capacity of participating countries and make access to vaccines more equitable.
