In February 2024, Osivax announced that the first participant in a first-in-human study has been dosed in a new Phase I trial to evaluate OVX033. The vaccine is a broad-spectrum vaccine candidate that has recently demonstrated cross-protection against three SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and an “excellent safety and tolerance profile”. The first-in-human trial will be conducted at the Clinical Investigation Centre in Vaccinology Cochin Pasteur in Paris.
OVX033
Osivax describes OVX003 as a “first-in-class coronavirus vaccine candidate” targeting the nucleocapsid (N), which is much less likely to mutate than surface antigens like Spike (S). Therefore, a “broader and more universal immune response” can be achieved. It was developed with the oligoDOMTM technology, a “novel proprietary nanoparticles technology” that is “specifically designed to trigger superior T-cell responses” as well as “strong and sustained B-cell responses.
The trial is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase I clinical study to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate at three dose levels (100 µg, 250 µg, and 500 µg) in 48 healthy subjects between the ages of 18 and 49.
Professor Odile Launay is the Principal Investigator for the trial and is “proud to participate” in the study to “evaluate the vaccine candidate’s role in preventing the pandemic-level spread of current and future SARS-COV-2 variants”.
“OVX003 has been shown in preclinical models to effectively provide broad protection across multiple strains of coronavirus.”
Alexandre Le Vert, CEO and Co-Founder of Osivax, hopes to “advance a broad-spectrum coronavirus vaccine that can be positioned against all SARS-CoV-2 variants and against future coronavirus pandemic threats”.
“Transitioning our second broad-spectrum candidate into the clinic further validates our self-assembling nanoparticle platform, OligoDOMTM, and our position as a pioneer in the advancement of a new class of vaccines.”
We look forward to hearing about another vaccine candidate in Osivax pipeline at the Congress in Washington this April; are you joining us there? Don’t forget to get your tickets here or subscribe for more updates and insights.
